Does anyone know if a garbage truck is stick shift or auto? the reason im asken is because i read on some site maybe it was this one that a garbage truck (well cleaned out of course) would make the perfect vehicle its heavy duty can store alot in the back. But alot of people dont know how to drive stick so this might create a problem. if someone knows it would be greatly appreciated

Many of the ones listed seem to be automatic
I'm not sure when the ban for links actually shuts off so because I'm new it's broken up
- a website follows -

www truckpaper com

has listings for used garbage trucks in the neighborhood of $15000-$40000
new for around $120000
... big range i know...

Anyways, hope that helped.

as far as i know the garbage truck thing was my idea, so you probably read it here. dump trucks and garbage trucks both offer huge relatively safe storage capacity, have extremely high quality engines (usually mercedes, mack, or caterpillar), and very high range.

answers.com has some general info here: answers.com

also, you can always look on ebay, since they do vary quite a bit.
first one i found is a 5 speed automatic with a 60 gallon tank:
ebay

"Road Scan" electric rear view mirrors on left and right side of cab. A PERKINS Mfg. Co. tote/cart dumper is mounted on the forward end of the loading container for very rapid dumping of residential garbage containers. This truck with the existing equipment is fully capable of picking up and dumping 900-1000 cans per day with a one man operation. Comes with a four volume set of Maintenance, Parts, and Operators Manuals. Title is clear and ready to transfer. THIS A "NO RESERVE" AUCTION. HIGH BIDDER WILL WIN THE TRUCK. I ALSO HAVE THIS TRUCK LISTED LOCALY AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CLOSE THIS AUCTION EARLY IF A BUYER MEETS MY PRICE. TITLE IS FREE AND CLEAR AND READY TO TRANSFER. This unit was city owned and maintained in first class condition. it is one of the cleanest and straightest that you will find. The demo video was taken with the truck engine at idle speed to allow more time to see the operating characteristics. The speed of all motions can be greatly increased by upping engine rpm. You may call me if I can be of further help. Mark 425 218 1676

Obviously some welding is required. Armoring of the cab is a must, as well as cutting holes to allow cargo access from the cab and I would personally cut a few roof holes and gunport/airholes in the sides. Also, I would permanently shut the back hatch and disable the compactor, putting a steel door on the side to allow more security. I can see it now.

OMG theyre coming steve! Close the hatch close the hatch!
Shit shit shit ok (reeeeee hatch closes slowly)
It's going too slow! They will get us!
AW FUCK I FORGOT IT STILL COMPACsquiiiiiish

Now that I think about it though, why the hell would you want a garbage truck when you could use a U-Haul van or the like? Better designed space, no mechanical changes needed, and potentially even refreshing air conditioning Very Happy

uhauls have 4 shitty tires, short range, and the cab isn't bullet proof and can easily be ripped open if you hit something with it. they have their uses, but they wouldn't qualify as a readily-accessable civilian tank

Because garbage trucks have bullet proof cabs right? Fine, just replace u-haul with like a class-c RV or a GMC Kodiak or perhaps even a lifted F-350 or 3500 series van. I've seen them tearing up the offroading in the outer banks like its nothing. And lots of cargo room.

I was thinking that if you had an armored car or something it would be loud and you would evuantally get stopped. But with a dump truck thats a good a idea. I mean if you dont mind hordes of zombies running after you cuz of ur sound but ya

I disagree. Why would you think that the armored car would eventually get stopped?

They are smaller, more maneuvarable, and have enough HP to power through a horde as long as you already had speed before being overwhelmed. Also less blindspots.

I'd be afraid getting out of a garbage truck after going through a horde. Plenty of places to latch onto and remain unseen.

Think about it, armored cars are designed to withstand attack without modification. You would have to seriously modify a garbage truck.

The garbage truck is a lot easier to get a hold of no doubt but if you can get your hands an armored vehicle by all means take it. The garbage truck would work but the armored vehicle is better.

Not to mention your driving skill. A garbage truck would take a hell of alot more practice to become proficient. You can relatively handle an armored truck/car as long as you have driven a large SUV or something similar.

Unfamiliarity with an object will get you killed. Stick to what you know.

All valid but you also have to remember the mileage you get with armored cars and garbage trucks. They're not that good.

Well, while they lack the fuel efficiency of an armored car, A Garbage Truck would be able to go farther and, Garbage Truck=more mass=more ramming power! Plus if you really needed to you could store a lot more supplies within a Garbage Truck than in an Armored Car. Thusly when/if you break down, you could survive much longer, if you don't break down, you could still carry more supplies to and fro.

you've been thinking about that a long time!

You're all aware how affordable a real deuce and half right? You can get a pretty nice one for $3500.
They're inefficient, but the fuel capacity is there.
