hehe i'm rereading these again for the first time in years and i'm giggling like an idiot. I never spelled this out, but these characters are drawn from people I know. Max is a combination of myself and my life long best friend Scott who had the same sense of humor and always made me laugh, Ann is Angel who has a very dry sarcastic somewhat abusive yet sort of playful ironic sense of humor, kate is based on kat who despite being very close friends to both of us either wasn't able to or didn't bother to keep up with our drama, and yanni is based off krepta the alien voice in my head that tells me to do things.

i made all those comics over a single summer 6 years ago, i don't have any of the templates or sprites or layouts and i haven't used photoshop in ages, not to mention my sense of humor changed quite a bit. if i was going to do more comics i would probably start completely over from scratch with a new concept and layout, maybe do hand drawn comics or something. anyway i'm busy as shit working 7 days a week right now so it's out of the question but i do have an awful lot of downtime and have been needing something to fill it so i'll mull the idea over.

after 2 hours tooling around with photoshop trying to build digital versions of these guys i realized it's way faster and easier to just do shit quality with a pen and photograph it.

i'm switching to doing these vertically because i feel like the panels are too tall and not wide enough. i can't just change the length or shape of a convenience store receipt at will.

I don't think China considers itself a communism anymore, I see a lot of old capitalism, a huge divide between rich and poor, and the state doesn't seem to take care of elderly or sick people at all (plenty of blind or old people on the street begging for money). everything I know about communism doesn't seem to apply. crime penalties are severe if you dont know the right people, but if you do pretty much everything seems to be legal.

a) my family does not live in china, i'm not originally from here.
b) chinese people are not particularly aggressive, there are a fair number of fist fights because everyone knows there's no weapons, but it's sort of like elementary school playground fights where nobody REALLY gets hurt

I don't know nazi principals well enough to comment much. everyone focuses on the actions of the famous german group that followed the principals of national socialism, but their political designs and ideals were far more complex than "kill all the jews", which is unfortunately the only thing anyone seems to know them for.

not to say i'm pro or anti nazi, i can't accurately form an opinion on a political organization that stopped existing while my grandparents were in preschool, but the problem with demonizing them and portraying them as a bunch of bloodthirsty lunatics is it makes it easy to say "this could never happen in my country, these people are nothing like me", when the reality is that the citizens acting under this political party are not that different from people anywhere else.

In the end, I think that humans are pretty much the same everywhere, and just about everyone is capable of the same kind of things. there's really not much variety when push comes to shove other than in traditional artwork clothing and language... deep down people are all selfish dicks who'll rationalize just about anything to hold on to what they have and maybe get a little bit more.

they don't see the people who were hurt, they look at the empire that was built, and nearly unifying europe is a pretty massive undertaking. china's very proud of its unification, and though they claim that nobody suffered unifying china DID have an effect on a lot of people, and i would imagine the people here probably believe that if europe had been unified it would have been a long term good.

i guess the only time genocide is bad is when the people committing it don't succeed. white people in america basically wiped out the native americans but having essentially succeeded only the native americans hate them for it. the germans failed to unify europe and the entire world hates them for it. if they had succeeded, europe would be the richest superpower in the world and probably be leading the world in curing disease and developing life-bettering technology.

As I understand it german national socialism wasn't very socialist, it was an attempt to analyze the human species from various regions by scientific method to determine each groups characteristics (sort of in the "what runs faster lions or tigers, what jumps farther lions or tigers" strain that we relentlessly put all animals through), in order to figure out which region had produced the most "highly" evolved or advanced homosapien, and then replace the worlds homosapiens with the one specific breed that was most highly advanced. Of course the scientists all being german and the studies all being done by germans the conclusion was "us", and in the end the entire thing was probably mostly a desperate gesture by germany to get out of the crippling economic debt that the country had been suffering from since world war 1 thirty years prior.

as a russian your grandfather would have been of military age when like half your countries male population got wiped out in the war trying to stop the german nazi advance. i'd be careful using a specifically german word to describe yourself, the term "nazi" isn't really meant to be a flexible category it refers to a very specific party during a specific time, and that party no longer exists.

Here's a great example that I saw in the paper when I was living in Atlanta: an African-American couple in Atlanta purchased some wood furniature that was a nice brown and later saw the tag that read "Color: Niger Brown". They were upset and contacted the seller who middle easterner and asked about the color name, and the importer said "Yes please very much it is named for the color of a Niger". The offended couple pressed charges, and after the defense atourney did research it turns out they were importing it from egypt or thereabouts and in egypt the color "Niger Brown" is like saying "Coffee Color", and is in fact named from the color of the Niger River, the largest river in West Africa that (not after a black person's skin color as was previously suspected).

This isn't the first time something like this has happened, when I was younger in LA there was an issue over the fact that in the Spanish language the word for black is "Negro". A restaurant patron had gotten upset when after serving him the waiter and the chef were speaking spanish and using the word "negros", but it turned out they were talking about a soccer game between argentina and new zealand (The new zealand team "All Blacks" would have sounded something like "Negros" in spanish).

in fact, it's entirely possible your word doesn't even come from the german word and evolved completely independently. Everyone freaks out when they see a swastica but India has been using the swastica for a thousand years or longer, and there are many times when similar designs are found painted on cave walls thousands of miles apart by cultures that have no contact with each other and it turns out to be a coincidence.
